Clazz Musician Bios

Brian Sawyers:  Composer, Arranger, Keyboards, Producer.

    Being a classically trained pianist and organist from the age of six, Brian chose jazz fusion as his music of choice after being introduced to the Jeff Lorber Fusion recordings in high school.  Prior to attending the Berklee College of Music, Brian joined forces with Todd Voelker and formed Razz.  Through extensive theory and performance study, Brian has developed a compositional and playing style that artfully blends several musical disciplines into a unique composite.  When not composing, playing or recording, he serves as the organ curator for the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California.

Todd Voelker:  Drums and Percussion

    Also having started at an early age, Todd's influences hail from a family of big band and traditional jazz musicians. Developing an interest in contemporary and Latin jazz led Todd to study with noted studio drummer and percussionist Alex Acuna.  Attention to detail has carried over into Todd's two main fields of occupation; music and architecture.  Aside from his recording and performance duties, Todd is quickly becoming one of Southern California's most prominent architects.  Todd also performs with Close Harmony, a nine piece big band and the Magma band with Coop Bayless.

Matthew Von Doran:  Guitar

    Matthew is one of the areas most in demand guitarists, teachers and studio musicians.  Proficient in many musical styles from classical through the blues, Matthew honed his technique with many of Southern California's finest rock, jazz and fusion bands.  He currently records and performs with the Don Miller Orchestra, a fine fourteen piece big band who has appeared on Seinfeld, The Scott Wilkie band, The Tim Moyer Band, The Kerry Getz Band, The Matt Johnson Trio  and his own group, The Matthew Von Doran Band.  Matthew also claims that restrooms have the best acoustics for practicing.

Tom Bevan:  Guitar

    Tom also shares his talents teaching, performing and recording.  He toured with Maynard Ferguson from 87' to 89' and was featured on Maynard's High Voltage 2 (which includes one of Tom's compositions), and Big Bop Noveau.   In 1991 he received the Yamaha Jazz playoff award for best jazz guitarist in Orange County.  Other artists he's performed with include The Carpenters, Della Reese, Bobby Shew, Hermans Hermits, Brandon Fields, and Jeff Kashiwa.  Tom's a much sought after teacher and jazz adjudicator for many of the country's college jazz programs.

Eric Stiller:  Bass

    Another alumnus of Berklee College of Music, Eric has recorded and performed with the likes of Bill Watrous, Pete Christlieb, Bobby Shew, Roy McCurdy, Randy Morgan, Ron Anthony and the Mark Matthew's Trio.  Just prior to his work with Razz, Eric had been on tour with the Maynard Ferguson big band.  Extremely proficient on both acoustic and electric basses, Eric has become one of the areas most in demand musicians.  (The cover of the Clazz CD is a silhouette of Eric rehearsing in studio).

Mahlon Hawk:  Bass
    Mahlon relocated to California from Panama in 1970.   He regularly tours throughout North, Central and South America with The Martin Valverde Group, one of Latin America's top Salsa bands.  Proficient in styles ranging from acid jazz to blues have made Mahlon a very in demand side man.  Other artists he's worked with include Steppenwolf, Bob Weir and The Midnights, Boss McQueen, The Drifters, Tower of Power horns, Jerry Street of the Temptations, Michael Palo,  Joshua with Jeff Baxter and Cheryl Wynn.  He can also be heard on the skateboard feature film "Go For It".

Albert Wing:  Electric Wind Instrument
    Albert spends most of his musical life on the saxophones, but is equally at home with the Electric Wind Instrument.   Raised on the classic and innovative styles of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, Albert has perfected a wide scope of the many styles of jazz.  He spent his early days with the band Airpocket and since has been a noted member of the Frank Zappa Band and the Fowler Brothers Band.  Just a few of the other artists Albert regularly works with are Diana Ross, George Benson, Michael McDonald and Paula Abdul.  On Clazz, Albert plays all the melodies on Sometimes Everytime.

Darrel Gardner:  Trumpet
    Darrel has over 30 years experience as a musician, conductor and producer.  As a trumpet and French horn player, Darrel has worked with Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Burt Bacharach, Johnny Mathis, Buddy Greco and Mitzi Gaynor among others.  He is a regular member in the orchestras of Les Brown and Ralph Carmichael and has toured with Ray Conniff and Percy Faith.  Darrel also holds better than 26 years of Broadway musical experience which include "My Fair Lady", "West Side Story" and "Phantom".  Darrel also stays very active with Christian music where he is a well respected choral conductor.

Matt Fronke:  Trumpet/Flugelhorn
    Matt is equally at home with jazz, funk classical, swing, reggae, salsa and New Orleans style jazz.  He has studied with Charlie Shoemake and Bobby Shew and is a regular member of The Bayou Brass Band.  Some of the artists Matt has played with include The Untouchables, Woody Herman's Thundering Herd, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Mel Torme, Eddie Money, Bobby McFerrin and The Rippingtons.  Some of the film and television work Matt has done includes "Mars Attacks", "The Rocketeer", "In the Line of Fire", "Seinfeld" and "The Late Show with David Letterman".

Tom Margitan:  Tenor and Alto Saxes
    From his early days touring with the United States Air Force band to his many current steady gigs , Tom continues to maintain his own trio, quartet and quintet and can be seen performing at several of Southern California's finest jazz clubs.  In the 70's Tom led two highly acclaimed groups; Fresh Wind (with whom he still performs) and Fire Sign.  Some of the artists Tom regularly performs with include Dr. Art Davis, Tom Ranier, Sherman Ferguson, Ricky Woodard, Bob Maize, Luther Hughes, John Ferraro, Roy McCurdy, Paul Kreibich, Andy Simpkins and Jack LeComte.

Brian Williams:  Baritone, Tenor and Alto Sax
    Brian is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music where he studied with Herb Pomeroy and Joe Viola.  He has performed and recorded extensively in Southern California for over 20 years.  Brian has played and recorded many of the areas jazz artists including Jack Sheldon, Charles Rutherford and Tom Kubis.  He has also served as a sideman for several film and television soundtracks and jingles.  Brian carries extensive arranging credits and offers his services as the park band arranger for Disneyland.  Brian is also very active in the areas music education programs.

Gary Van Pelt:  Engineer

    Gary's affinity for gormet mexican food has endeared him to the  members of Razz.  While having some of the best ears in the industry is important, Mr. Van Pelt's knowledge of all things Carnitas is something we all take very seriously.  Gary is the senior recording and dubbing engineer for the Haven of Rest Christian radio ministries based here in Southern California.  He also carries the duties of senior recording and mixing engineer for the Crystal Cathedral's Hour of Power program that airs in over 100 countries.  Mr Van Pelt has worked extensively with such industry personal as David Foster, Bill Schnee, Toby Foster, and Doug Sax.  He was also the recording and tour engineer with Oingo Boingo in the early eighties.
